Kona's main attraction is sports-fishing and the Mokuaikuau Church, the oldest in Hawaii. Also important is the King Kamehameha I Heiau; Hulihee Palace; which is now a museum and was once a summer residence of royalty and the 12th-century Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park; a "Place of Refuge", once a sanctuary where taboo-breakers could receive ritual purification. You can also see the small white monument near Napoopoo marking the spot where Captain Cook landed.

The only coffee grown commercially in the U.S. is grown in Hawaii, and the best of the Hawaiian coffees comes from the Kona district.
