NORWALK, CT (July 9, 2013) For the second time in three years, Tauck has been named the “World’s Best River Cruise Line” by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine, one of the world’s most authoritative and respected publications for travelers. The award, which will be presented to Tauck officials later this month at a ceremony in New York City, is based on the results of the magazine’s annual readers survey. Full survey results and a complete list of winners will be included in the magazine’s August issue.
Travel + Leisure readers determined the overall winner by rating the top river cruise lines in a total of six categories; service, value, itineraries/destinations, activities, cabins and dining. The fact that the criteria was so broad-based makes the honor especially gratifying, according to Tauck CEO Dan Mahar.
“Tauck river cruises are crafted and choreographed to be complete destination experiences. For us to excel in the Travel + Leisure survey across such broad criteria affirms that we’re doing an exceptional job in delivering every element of the cruise experience,” said Mahar. “We have beautiful ships, of course, but it’s far more than that. We’re delivering compelling itineraries and unique shore excursions that totally ‘wow’ our guests. We’re providing an intimate, relaxing atmosphere aboard our ships. And we’re backing it all with the very highest levels of service and value.”
Mahar noted that delivering that kind of across-the-board excellence, and doing so day-in and day-out, requires a true team effort. “I simply couldn’t be prouder of our entire riverboat team,” said Mahar. “Our Cruise Directors and Tauck Directors, our office staff, our exceptional network of partners, and our travel agents all share in this honor. And of course, I’m incredibly grateful to our many past river cruise guests who placed their trust in Tauck by traveling with us, and who gave us such high scores in the survey.”
TWO NEW RIVERBOATS AND FOUR NEW RIVER CRUISES ON TAP FOR 2014
The announcement of the Travel + Leisure award comes as Tauck is expanding its fleet of European riverboats and adding new river cruise itineraries. In 2014 Tauck will launch its new ms Inspire and ms Savor riverboats (in April and June, respectively), and it will also debut four new river cruise itineraries in Europe, including its first-ever cruises on the Seine in France.
Both of Tauck’s new ships will be 443 feet in length and accommodate 130 passengers, compared to other lines’ ships of the same size that house up to 190 guests, or 46% more passengers, in the same space. The ms Inspire and ms Savor will also have twenty-two 300 square foot suites each, and both ships will also feature eight innovative, 225 square foot “loft” cabins on the lower (Emerald) deck. The loft cabins feature a raised platform seating area that offers window views and a table with two chairs. A raised ceiling above the seating area allows the use of a much taller window than can normally be incorporated into lower-level cabins. The taller window, in turn, allows far more natural light to fill the cabin and the upper portion of the window can be opened for fresh air.
About Tauck River Cruising. Tauck currently offers 15 all-inclusive river voyages throughout Europe on four Jewel Class ships – the ms Swiss Emerald, ms Swiss Sapphire, ms Swiss Jewel, and ms Swiss Treasures – that each carry just 118 passengers. The two new vessels, the ms Inspire and ms Savor, will comprise Tauck’s new Inspiration Class of ships. Itineraries range from 8 to 24 days, with over 100 departures annually on the Danube, Rhône, Rhine, Moselle, Saône, Main and Maas rivers.
Each Tauck river cruise is fully inclusive with zero options sold, and with all shore excursions, gratuities, onboard beer, wine and premium spirits, airport transfers and more built into the price. Tauck river cruises are also notable for their high number of service personnel aboard each vessel, with a Tauck Cruise Director and three Tauck Directors attending to guests’ needs (vs. a single cruise director charged with the care of up to 190 guests on other cruise lines’ ships).
The trio of Tauck Directors, often working in tandem with local experts, also lead the company’s signature shore excursions. These shore excursions leverage Tauck’s 88 years of guided tour expertise to provide insider access to exclusive experiences, from an elegant “Imperial Evening” with dinner and classical music inside a private Viennese palace, to a market tour and tasting at Les Halles de Lyon in Provence.
