We sailed the Diamond Princess as part of a rail and sea package in Alaska a few years ago. This was my first non-Disney cruise and I was of course a little Disney is amazing. We had an awesome time from our first night in the Princess Lodge, The Bear Lodge to stepping on board our rail car for our journey from Fairbanks, Alaska down to the ship. Service was good and the rail portion was so comfortable and beautiful. I cannot imagine just sailing Alaska...the rail package was just great. Once we boarded the ship, it was immaculately elegant, yet we were comfortable dressing casually for the most part. We had booked into the same restaurant every night, and we found this to not be great. It felt stuffy and uncomfortable so we never went back. Instead we opted to dine in the buffet restaurant each night which featured a changing menu. The food was nice and the ambiance was comfortable. We used the pool and the spa and all were quite nice. Great experience, just not Disney.

I have taken 5 Princess Cruises with my family. I completely disagree with Silly Sally's comments. Excellent food--far better than other mainstream cruise lines. Professional staff. Reasonable tips. Very good English. No overwhelming flyers. We cruise 3x per year and will choose Princess whenever it is available.

I am NOT IMPRESSED with Princess. Just got back from a Princess cruise to Alaska on the Island Princess. They nickle and dime you EVERY MINUTE aboard this ship, trying to get you to pay gratuities to all staff many times over (they have mandatory daily gratuities deducted from your credit card, and you have to object to this to get them to stop it, AND they have automatic gratuities on all drinks and food ordered at the "upgraded" restaurants, etc., etc., etc. And they are CONSTANTLY , trying to get you to buy things (there are CONSTANT advertising brochures and fliers stuck in your room every day), from jewelery, to clothes, to "upgrade" dining, etc., etc. SO TIRESOME !!! And the food is nothing to write home about, believe me. And the staff are worked to the bone and are and are NOT knowledgeble about ANYTHING... so a sure way to get MISINFORMATION about absolutely anything to do with the cruise, is to ask staff members, most of whom have very minimal English skills.
