Afternoon Tea on Silver Spirit
Thursday, August 26, 2010
The tradition of Afternoon Tea is a long-standing one on cruise ships. On the larger “mass market” ships, the tradition has degenerated into little more than a snack buffet. That is not the case on Silversea. The tradition of Afternoon Tea is alive and well. Each afternoon at 3:45 The Bar is converted into an elegant tearoom with white linen tablecloths, flowers on each table and waiters adorned with white gloves to serve you.

Today, for the first time this cruise, we decided to treat ourselves to Afternoon Tea. After attending an excellent lecture on Manta, Ecuador conducted by resident Destination Expert, John Tabbutt-McCarthy, we strolled to The Bar for “a spot of tea”. After being seated at an elegant table for two, we were presented with a selection of bagged teas from which to choose. Silversea also offers a large selection of loose tea as well. I chose Earl Gray and Rickee decided on the Camomile. Soon we each received our own pot of tea and were instructed as to how long to allow the tea to steep before pouring.

A waiter appeared soon with a tray filled with finger sandwiches. There was Egg Salad, Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese, Cream Cheese and Cucumber, Chicken Salad, and Roast Beef. We each tried two, and all were excellent. Next, a tray of miniature pastries arrived. This is where I have to bow out, as my diet will not allow me the luxury of enjoying the sweets. Rickee, on the other hand, has no such limitations. I believe I witnessed a Chocolate Chip Cookie, a Chocolate Surprise and one other treat make its way onto her plate. There are also traditional Scones with assorted jams and clotted cream.

In addition to the more formal Afternoon Tea in The Bar, Silversea guests can enjoy a similar experience in their suites from 4:00pm to 7:00pm each day. A selection of “Gourmet Bites” (below) are available from your butler.

  • Caviar with Blinis
  • Jumbo Prawns with Cocktail Sauce
  • Foie Gras Terrine with Brioche
  • Smoked Salmon on Pumpernickel Bread
  • Alaskan Crab Claws with a Duo of Dips
  • Assorted Cheeses and Crackers
  • Daily selection of Mediterranean delicacies

Afternoon Tea is a decadent treat and one that Silversea takes very seriously. The guests on our Silver Spirit cruise seem to really appreciate all of the attention to detail that Silversea has gone to with its tea service.
